Interview exclusive: Matt "The Immortal" Brown, pt. 1 | Ep. 63

We secured a great interview with Matt "The Immortal" Brown, who weighed in on a variety of topics including fighter management, the antitrust case and more.

A few weeks ago, Matt Brown announced his retirement from the UFC. Fans around the globe registered outright shock at the longtime crowd favorite’s decision to step away from the game, but we wished him well and shared our favorite memories, happy that he was able to escape the sport on his own terms and with his wits about him. He’d hoped to go out with UFC 300, and when Jim Miller asked for that fight, the community roared collectively at what a phenomenal contest it would be. Alas, the UFC decided to grant Bobby Green the spot against Miller, and Brown ultimately went on to make his announcement.

Since then, “The Immortal” has been splitting his time between renovating his gym and his other business of flipping houses. We were able to snag some time with Matt yesterday for an in-depth interview. The first portion of that, we’re giving away for free, today. The second half will air on Thursday. Follow along with our outline as you listen:

  • It’s been three weeks or so since you announced your retirement. What have those three weeks been like for you?

  • How long did you ponder your decision to make your exit from the sport?

  • You said you wanted to dedicate yourself to a life of service to others/fighters. Explain that more and talk about your training series you’re putting together.

  • Lots of fighters retire but end up returning for one reason or another. How long did you prepare yourself for retirement?

  • It’s been ages since anyone’s done a current analysis on the costs of being a fighter. What’s the most significant cost of being a fighter in 2024?

  • Do different locations impact costs?

  • What’s your take on fighter management, and how was your experience when you had one?

  • Turning down fights is a surefire way to end up on the naughty list. Is there a diplomatic way to do that, without incurring a negative response?
